Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our awnings and installation services.

How much does an awning cost in Suffolk?

Every awning is priced bespoke based on the type (patio, window, or commercial), the projection and width, the frame and fabric specification, and whether you add motors, sun and wind sensors, or LED lighting. Rather than quote from a generic price list, we visit your home for a free survey, take precise measurements of your wall, soffit, or post locations, and discuss how you'll use the space. You'll get a fixed written quote within a few days, and there's no charge for the visit. Call 01473 487711 or book through the contact page.

Which type of awning is right for me?

Patio awnings are designed for outdoor living and entertaining, with large span coverage and optional lighting and heating to create a comfortable outdoor room. Window awnings are smaller covers that shade individual windows, cut heat gain, and add kerb appeal to homes and shopfronts. Commercial awnings are heavy-duty, often branded systems for hotels, restaurants, cafés, and retail premises where you want to extend trading space and shelter customers. We'll talk through which fits your space during the survey.

How do awnings handle UK weather, especially wind and rain?

Our awnings are built for British conditions with powder-coated aluminium frames and UV-resistant, water-repellent acrylic fabrics. Motorised models can be fitted with wind sensors that automatically retract the awning in strong gusts, protecting the fabric and frame from damage. Commercial systems use heavier frames designed for daily use in exposed settings. Even with sensors, we recommend retracting motorised awnings during prolonged heavy rain, since pooled water is the main cause of fabric damage.

Do I need planning permission for an awning?

Most awnings on private homes don't need planning permission because they fall under permitted development. Listed buildings, properties in conservation areas, and flats often need consent before you fit anything to an external wall, and very large or commercial installations may also require a planning application. We can advise during your survey and point you toward your local Suffolk planning office if needed. (Verify with your local authority for your specific property.)

How big can an awning be?

Standard awnings span up to around 7m wide with a 4m projection on a single unit, which covers most domestic patios and decks. Beyond that, you can couple two or more units together to cover larger entertaining spaces, restaurant terraces, or commercial fronts. The wall, soffit, or post mounting also has to support the weight, especially for larger commercial systems. We assess what your wall and space can hold during the survey and recommend the right size.

Can awnings be motorised and connected to smart home systems?

Yes. Most of our awnings can be motorised with Somfy or similar tubular motors, controlled by remote, wall switch, smartphone app, or voice through Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit. We can also fit sun sensors that extend the awning when the sun is bright and wind sensors that retract it automatically when the wind picks up. Solar-charged motors are available for installations without easy mains access.

How long do awning fabrics last, and do they fade?

Quality acrylic awning fabrics from manufacturers like Dickson and Sattler are colour-fast for around 10 to 15 years before noticeable fading, depending on south-facing exposure and how often the awning is left out in direct sun. We recommend retracting your awning when not in use to prolong fabric life and protect against unexpected weather. Aluminium frames are powder-coated and typically last decades with no maintenance beyond an occasional wipe.
